Schulstad Family History

Ludvig and Lina Schulstad with first child, Oscar (1880)
This is a brief history of Ludvig and Lina Schulstad, two Norwegian immigrants who came to North America in the 1870's and settled in present day North Dakota. This abbreviated history provides you with some basic information about Ludvig and Lina and their nine children, and their experiences in their early years in America.

Ludvig was born on October 25, 1849 in Grue, Solør, Norway. He was the son of Lars Hansen Ronningen-Skulstad and Lisbeth Pedersdatter. He was baptized and confirmed as Ludvig Larsen in the Grue Church in Norway. He trained as a tailor in his father's tailor shop, located in their farm home. He was only 20 years old when he emigrated to America on May 27, 1870.

Ludvig initially settled in Mitchell County, Iowa, where he worked on a farm. He soon took a job with the railroad as it was a burgeoning industry in linking the continent. He worked with his friends Christ and John Odegaard. Specifically, he worked on a railroad maintenance crew out of Mason City, Iowa, while attending night school to learn the English language. He also worked as a fireman on a steamboat for two summers. This was on the International and Selkirk steam boats on the Red River of the North, which traveled between Moorhead, Minnesota and Winnipeg, Manitoba.

After five years in America (in 1875), he went to Lyle, Minnesota and clerked in a hardware store. He also undertook to learn the trade of being a tinsmith.

Lina, who was younger than Ludvig, was born on April 9, 1855, also in Grue, Solør, Norway. She was the fifth and youngest child of Lars Johannesen By-Odegaard and his wife Olia Kristiansdatter. Her mother died when Lina was 16 weeks old. She was baptized and confirmed as Lina Larsdatter in the Grue Church in Norway.

When she was 18 years old, she worked at the home of Fredrik Nielson, the organist in the Grue Church. On July 19, 1878 (at the age of 23), Lina left Norway and came to America. She settled in Lyle, Minnesota where her older sister Olivia (Mrs. Bernt Hedemark) lived. We don't know the full story of their courtship, but less than a year after she arrived in Iowa (April 5th, 1879), she married Ludvig. The couple (Ludvig was not quite 30 and Lina was about to turn 24) was married at St. Ansgar, Iowa. While they lived in Lyle, Minnesota, they had three children: Oscar, Lizzie, and Lewis Melvin.

In the sixth year of marriage (1885), they moved to Norman, Winnebago County, Iowa, where Ludvig opened a hardware store of his own. They had two more children while there, Mabel and Lottie. Four years later, in 1889, Ludvig sold the business and they moved to Reynolds, Grand Forks County, Dakota Territory. There, Ludvig had a hardware store until his retirement 28 years later in 1917. While in Reynolds they had four more children: Olivy, Harry, Clarence and Mildred. Ludvig died on December 21, 1928 and Lina died on May 18, 1936, both in Reynolds.

Oscar Lawrence was born on November 6, 1879, in Lyle, Minnesota. He married Emma Gustafson on May 20, 1903, and they had 3 children: Ruth, Lawrence, and Donald. Oscar died on March 6, 1970 in Tampa, Florida.

Lizzie Otelia was born on May 27, 1881 in Lyle, Minnesota. She married Carl Olson on January 23, 1922 in Los Angeles. She died on April 2, 1964 in Seattle.

Lewis Melvin was born on December 13, 1883 in Lyle, Minnesota. He married Blanche White on November 5, 1917. They had one child, Lewis Melvin, Junior, born on March 9, 1918. Blanche died on July 11, 1919. Lewis Melvin married Marie O'Hara in 1923. They had four children: William, Thomas, Mark and Joan. Lewis Melvin died on January 2, 1970 in Seattle.

Mabel Laura was born on February 8, 1886 in Norman, Iowa. She married Fred McMicken on August 25, 1914 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. She had one child, Clarence Raymond McMicken. She died on October 10, 1982 in Eagle Rock, CA.

Lottie Helma Marie was born on October 29, 1887 in Norman, Iowa. She died on August 28, 1963, in Seattle.

Olivy Antonia was born on July 23, 1889 in Reynolds, North Dakota. She died on January 17, 1947 in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Harry Reynolds was born on September 8, 1891 in Reynolds, North Dakota. He died on July 2, 1992 in Fargo, North Dakota.

Clarence Leonard was born on March 18, 1894 in Reynolds, North Dakota. He married Ruth Brathvode on December 28, 1916 in Crookston, Minnesota. They had six children: John, Ruth, George, Lina Anne, David, and Charles. Clarence died on August 26, 1990 in Twin Valley, Minnesota.

Mildred was born on August 2, 1898 in Reynolds, North Dakota. She married Russell Taber on May 23, 1929, in Seattle. They had three children: Russell James, Jr., Lina Elizabeth, and Harry. Mildred died on April 24, 1987, in Seattle, Washington.

This abbreviated history is long on fact and short on the true adventures experienced by this remarkable couple as they forged a life on the American frontier in a time of great hardship and travail. Their remarkable story, and the different directions, vocations and experiences of their 9 children, are certainly an American tale - a story of two young people who left the "old world" (Europe) to make a better life for themselves in the "new world" - America. We hope you will enjoy our website as you trace the descendants of Ludvig and Lina, now down to six generations and scattered throughout these United States.

(Note: the sources for this history are Loretta Odegaard in her book, A Viking Heritage, and Lottie and Oscar Schulstad, in their book, The Ludvig Schulstad Family, published in 1953).
